North East Design Review and Enabling Service
On Tuesday 10th July, Northern Architecture was invited to support a STEM Enrichment day, Maths Takes You Further, at the Dryden Centre in Gateshead, with an emphasis on practical maths activities.
David Thomas, Teaching and Learning consultant for Education Gateshead coordinated the event. Richard Lissaman, from the Mathematics Institute, University of Warwick gave an introductory presentation From Google to Gaming, on the application of further maths within a broad range of subjects and careers.
Northern Architecture gave students an insight into careers in the built environment sector involving maths, such as architecture, urban design, surveying, landscape architecture, engineering and construction.
Eleven schools took part, with Year 10 students from a variety of schools working together in each of three carousel groups. The hands-on nature of the workshops ensured that students were given the opportunity to apply their mathematical skills and use space as a raw material in constructing a model shelter. The sessions were deliverd by Education Officer Sara Cooper, with support from recent architecture graduate, James Tippling
Participants very much appreciated the interactive nature of the activities.
Comments from students on the sessions:
It made me appreciate maths is all around us
Entertaining and relevant to me
Architecture, as it was creative as well as mathematical
You could put maths to a practical use
Thanks go to all participating students and staff and to David Thomas for inviting us to support the event.
