North East Design Review and Enabling Service

Northern Architecture have developed the archiGRAD summer school with support from Newcastle University. The archiGRAD summer school builds upon the core archiGRAD project and offers opportunities for architecture and other built environment students to gain work experience over the summer months based within local practices and community engagement projects.
Northern Architecture are developing and extending the archiGRAD programme into a practice based summer school/ work experience scheme for architecture students and those from other built environment disciplines and so far FaulknerBrowns, Plus Three Architecture, Xsite architecture, Hugh Massey Architects, Planning & Landscape Consultants and Medical Architecture (MAAP) and the Globe Gallery have all pledged to provide mentoring support and/or office space to host teams of students over the summer. Â The scheme will also offer a community engagement project strand with opportunities for students to get involved in Northern Architecture supported projects including Byker Lives.
The aim of the project is to extend the archiGRAD offer to provide office based experience during the summer vacation for all students between years, not just ‘unemployed graduates’. The need for this project has emerged as a response to an increasing student appetite for ‘work placements’ in local practices over the summer months and many practices either unable to accommodate them or feeling uncomfortable about offer un-paid work experience or internships following guidance from RIBA on this issue.
The archiGRAD model has proven successful as an approach to provide meaningful experience, skills and personal development for graduates in a non-exploitative way and it is hoped that the archiGRAD summer school will provide the opportunity for a large number of students to access work experience opportunities and provide an additional resource to the region with the students working voluntarily on speculative design or design research projects for a number of charitable, not-for-profit or public sector clients.
