Times of great plans, big investments, and grandiose interventions driven by money have now passed and we don’t know when they will return. Urban design, development process and regeneration are taking on new meanings and finding new narratives through the re-adjustment of societal values, from prosperity, marketing and imaging, to “making”, personal relationships, wellbeing and resilience.

In revitalising places, we are now thinking small, temporary, experimental, testing out. The roles and skills of built environment professionals are challenged to adjust and keep up with these new exciting trends and university education is having to follow suit. Urban Design is a process driven social discipline interested in people and how they use and give meaning to spaces and to that end it remains very relevant at current challenging times.

Our graduates have come from all over the world, from varying socioeconomic personal and cultural backgrounds. In this past year they have all passionately engaged with these challenges and are in the process of getting comfortable in their new-found identity of practitioners who will influence and be influenced by the world around them. Before they all set off to “the places they’ll go” they are all inviting you to celebrate the end of a challenging year, showcasing their work over some drinks and nibbles, mingling and discussing urban design!

The event will take place on Friday the 7th of September from 5:30 onwards. It will include a number of short talks by academics, professionals, current and ex-students on the topic of Temporary Urbanism, to spark up debate and conversation. We would be delighted if you could join us.

Speakers Include:

Amanda Reynolds

Amanda is an Architect and Urban Designer with over 25 years experience in master planning, urban design, architecture, community engagement, expert evidence and design review on a range of projects in the UK and overseas.

Dermot Foley

Dermot Foley Landscape Architects was established in 2001 and provides landscape architecture and urban design services for building and planning projects.

Ali Madanipour

Ali Madanipour has studied (MArch, PhD), practised, researched, and taught architecture, urban design and planning, winning design and research awards, and working with academic and municipal partners from around the world. His work has been translated into German, Mandarin, Japanese and Persian. He is a founding member of Global Urban Research Unit at the University of Newcastle.

Current students will also present as well as recent graduate Ha Thai who will talk about life after the MA Urban Design course.
