Duty to Involve: what it means to community led design
Newcastle City Library
Legislation introduced in April 2009 called for all local authorities to involve local people in decisions that affect them. Six to twelve months on, this event set out to explore what effect this mandate has had on local authoritites and the people they serve. Has it stimulated more participative design processes around building and regeneration projects? And what challenges might this mandate present to local government, residents and other organisations?
A fantastic quick guide to this legislation can be found on Urban Forum's website, click here.
Panel Members were:
Andy Roberts, Managing Director of Architecture, Space Group
David Slater, Executive Director of Environment & Regeneration Newcastle City Council

Current sustainability standards for the built environment industry, in particular the housing sector, are not impacting enough on policy nor producing the results they should.
This event will look at the political, technical, financial and social barriers to delivering sustainable design standards. Presentations will include project case studies, lessons learnt and recommendations from Northern European countries, that have seen sustainability standards providing good guidance and leadership in the housing sector. Could the North East lead the way in sustainability standards?
Design Event 09: Urban Translation Tours
Following on from the Urban Translation tours of Newcastle and Sunderland developed for DE07 and DE08, Northern Architecture have devised Urban Translation Middlesbrough, a new, alternative tour of the town.

Offering their opinions, anecdotes and expert perspectives will be Les Southerton, Economist and Chartered Town Planner who has worked on Teesside since 1970, Tim Bailey, Principal of Xsite Architechure, Steven Stokoe, Head of Design Services at Middlesbrough Council, Rachel Cleminson, Middlesbrough’s first Urban Design Officer, and writer Andy Croft who has lived in and written about the town over the last 25 years.
